University of Connecticut RefWorks Support

Using RefWorks with Library Databases

Many of the UConn Libraries' licensed journal research databases allow search results to be exported directly to RefWorks. In addition to the full bibliographic data, you can export the abstract, keywords, and other information, without retyping.

AnthroSource

  • While searching the AnthroSource database, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Send to Citation Mgr'.
  • From the Citation Manager for Format select 'RefWorks' and the click 'Download Article Citation Data'.

 

CAB Databases

  • While searching any CAB database, click the 'Star' icon next to items in the search results you wish to save.
  • Click 'Marked Records' link (along the right side of the search results).
  • From the marked records screen click 'Export Marked Citations' from the panel on the right side of the screen.
  • Select 'Full Record' for the format and click 'Export to RefWorks'.

Cambridge Collections Online

  • While searching any of the Cambridge Collections Online databases click on a record.
  • From within the record scroll to the bottom of the screen and select "Download Citation: as RIS'.
  • Save the file to the desktop on your computer.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'RIS Format'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select 'Cambridge Journals Online'.
  • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from Cambridge Collection Online.
  • Click 'Import'

Compendex & Inspec Databases

  • While searching, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click 'Download' (near the top of the results listing).
  • From the Dowload Selected Records screen select 'RefWorks direct import' then click 'download'

CQ Electronic Library Databases

  • While searching any of the CQ Electronic Library databases click on a record.
  • From within the record click 'CiteNow' (near the top of the page)
  • From the CiteNow! pop-up window scroll to the bottom and click 'Export citation to:' then select 'RefWorks'

Databases include: CQ Congress Collection · CQ Electronic Library · CQ Researcher

EbscoHOST Databases

  • While searching any EbscoHOST database, select articles you wish to save by clicking 'Add to folder' for each item.
  • When searching is completed, from the folder has items panel (along the right side of the screen) click 'Folder View'.
  • Click the 'Select/Deselet All' checkbox and click 'Export' (page icon with arrow).
  • From the Save citations to a file formatted for menu select 'Direct Export to RefWorks'.
  • Click 'Save'.
  • A pop-up window is generated so if you references are not taken to directly to your RefWorks account, temporarily turn-off your pop-up blocker.

Everything at UConn - Summon Search

  • While searching in Everything at UConn - Summon Search, select articles you wish to save by clicking 'Save this Item' icon for each item.
  • When searching is completed, click the Saved items folder (along the bottom of the screen)'.
  • Click 'RefWorks' from the saved items window.
  • A pop-up window is generated so if you references are not taken to directly to your RefWorks account, temporarily turn-off your pop-up blocker.

 

FirstSearch Databases

  • While searching any of the FirstSearch databases, place a check mark next to terms in search results you wish to save and then click 'Marked Records'.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Export'.
  • In the 'Direct Export Records' window select 'RefWorks' then click 'Export'.

Note for FirstSearch Users (including WorldCat)

  • While searching FirstSearch be sure to turn off the pop-up blocker.  In the Internet Explorer menu bar click on Tools - Page info – Permissions, or, under Tools go to pop up blocker settings and add firstsearch.oclc.org.  You may have to hold down the Control button while clicking 'Export'.
  • In Firefox click on Tools – Options – Content and add firstsearchoclc.org as an exception.
  • While searching FirstSearch database, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click 'Export'.
  • An Export page will come up, choose the citation option you want and RefWorks.
  • Click 'Export'.
  • If it does not export, check you pop-up blocker.  Try holding down the control key while clicking export

Gale Databases:(Academic OneFile & Gale Virtual Reference Collection)

  • While searching some of the Gale databases, mark items in search results you wish to save and click 'Add to list'.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'My List' tab and again select items in this list for export.
  • Click 'Output' and specify export format: 'RefWorks direct export'. Click Export to move them to your RefWorks database.

Google Scholar

  • To customize Google Scholar to export references directly to RefWorks click on the 'Scholar Preferences' link next to the search box.
  • In the Bibliographic Manager section click 'Show links to import citations into' and select 'RefWorks' and click 'Save Preferences'.
  • Click on 'Import into RefWorks' from the Google Scholar results screen'.

HAPI (Hispanic American Periodicals Index) :

  • While searching the HAPI (Hispanic American Periodicals Index) database, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save and then click 'Add to Marked List'.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'View Marked List'.
  • From the Marked List window select 'Download Records'.
  • Once the Download the Marked List window appears click 'Export to RefWorks' link.
 

HOMER - Library Catalog

  • While searching HOMER - Library Catalog, mark items in the search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click 'Selected all pages'.
  • Click 'Printer Friendly Version' and then select all the text displayed by pressing ctrl + A or right click and select 'select all'..
  • Copy the text selected by pressing ctrl + C or right click and select 'copy'.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'Endevor Voyager'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select 'University Connecticut'.
  • Click Import Data from the following Text and then paste your text by pressing ctrl + V or right click and select 'paste'
  • Click 'Import'.

JSTOR

  • While searching JSTOR, mark items in search results you wish to save and click 'Save Citation(s)'.
  • You will be promoted to login to save your citations. Create a login by clicking the 'Registering' link.
  • Once logged in to your JSTOR account at the top of the screen click the 'Saved Citations(s)' link.
  • Re-select articles you wish to export to RefWorks and click on 'Export Article Citations'
  • Click 'RefWorks' to move them to your RefWorks database.

LexisNexis Academic:

  • While searching LexisNexis, mark items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Export Bibliographic References' (book icon in top right corner of results listing) and select 'Export'.

OvidSP Databases

Note: Direct export is not compatible with RefWorks
  • While searching OvidSP, place a check mark next to items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, navigate to the 'Results Manager' and select 'Complete Reference' from the Fields menu along the left side of your results listing.
  • From the actions menu along the left side of the your results listing click 'Save'.
  • Select'Windows Style Linefeeds' or 'Macintosh Style Linefeeds' and click 'Continue'.
  • Save the file to the desktop on your computer.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'OVID'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select the name of the database you were searching (ex. Health & Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)'.
  • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from OvidSP.
  • Click 'Import'.

Databases include: BIOSIS Previews · Health & Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI) · International Pharmaceutical Abstracts· Journals @ OVID (LWW Nursing Journals) · Journals @ OVID · MEDLINE · Mental Measurements Yearbook

Oxford Online: (Grove Art Online, Grove Music Online, & Oxford African American Studies Center)

While searching within Grove Art online, Grove Music Online or Oxford African American Studies Center databases select a record.
Oxford African American Studies
    • From within the record click 'cite'near the top of your screen and select "RefWorks'.
    • Save the file to the desktop on your computer.
    • Login to RefWorks.
    • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
    • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'RIS Format'.
    • From the Database drop down menu select 'Reference Manager'.
    • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from Oxford African American Studies.
    • Click 'Import'
Grove Art Online and Grove Music Online
    • From within the record click 'cite'near the top of your screen and select 'Export a citation'.
    • Save the file to the desktop on your computer.
    • Login to RefWorks.
    • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
    • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'RIS Format'.
    • From the Database drop down menu select 'Grove Art Online' or 'Grove Music Online' depending on the database you were searching.
    • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from Grove Art Online or Grove Music Online.
    • Click 'Import'

    Databases include Grove Art Online · Grove Music Online · Oxford African American Studies Center

ProQuest Databases

  • While searching any ProQuest database, place a check mark next to items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Marked Items'.
  • Click on 'Export Directly to RefWorks'.

Databases include ABI/INFORM Global · American Periodicals Series 1740-1920 · ASFA: Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts · GeoRef · Hoover’s Company Records· Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts · Oceanic Abstracts · PAIS International · Philosopher’s Index ·ProQuest Dissertations & ThesesProQuest Newspapers · ProQuest Historical Newspapers· Social Services Abstracts · Sociological Abstracts · Water Resources Abstracts

PubMed

  • While searching PubMed, check the box next to all records you want to put in RefWorks.
  • When all desired records are checked, go to the ‘Send to:’ pull-menu and select 'Citation Manager'.
  • Save the file to the desktop on your computer. If you do not change the file name, it will automatically be named ‘citations.nbib’.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'NLM PubMed'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select 'PubMed'.
  • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from PubMed.
  • Click 'Import'.

SciFinder Scholar

  • From the search results page select the references you want to import.
  • Click Save As (located on the navigation bar).
  • Navigate to the local drive and directory where you want to save the file.
  • Select Tagged Format (*.txt) as the file type.
  • Click Save.
  • Log in to RefWorks.
  • Select References/Import from the toolbar.
  • Select CAS Scifinder as the data source and Multiple Databases as the database.
  • Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
  • Click Import.
  • Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

SciFinder Web

  • From the search results page select the references you want to import.
  • Click Export (from the top of the results list).
  • In the Export options, select either All Answers or Only Selected Answers.
  • Name your file.
  • Select Tagged Format (*.txt) as the file type.
  • Click Export.
  • Log in to RefWorks.
  • Select References/Import from the toolbar.
  • Select CAS Scifinder as the data source and CAPlus as the database.
  • Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
  • Click Import.
  • Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

SCOPUS

  • Conduct your search and mark your records for import.
  • Click on the Export link, located above the results.
  • Select RefWorks direct export as the export format.
  • Select the citation format you prefer.  For the most complete record, we recommend selecting Complete Format as your citation format.
  • Click the Export button.
  • Log in to RefWorks.
  • Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Databases include: SCOPUS · Drugs & Pharmacology: EMBASE · Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine: EMBASE

 

Zoological Record:

  • Select the record(s) to include in the output.
  • Locate the pull-down menu that says “Save to EndNote online” and change the selection to Save to RefWorks.
  • Select the Number of Records and Record Content you prefer. 
  • Click Send
  • Log into RefWorks.
  • Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.
