Using RefWorks with library databases

Many of the UConn Libraries' licensed journal research databases allow search results to be exported directly to RefWorks. In addition to the full bibliographic data, you can export the abstract, keywords, and other information, without retyping.

AnthroSource:
  • While searching the AnthroSource database, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Send to Citation Mgr'.
  • From the Citation Manager for Format select 'RefWorks' and the click 'Download Article Citation Data'.

CAB databases:
  • While searching any CAB database, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, select 'RefWorks' from the drop down menu along the bottom of your results list and click 'export'.

Cambridge Collections Online:
  • While searching any of the Cambridge Collections Online databases click on a record.
  • From within the record scroll to the bottom of the screen and select "Download Citation: as RIS'.
  • Save the file to the desktop on your computer.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'RIS Format'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select 'Cambridge Journals Online'.
  • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from Cambridge Collection Online.
  • Click 'Import'

Compendex & INSPEC databases:
  • While searching, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click 'Download' (near the top of the results listing).
  • From the Dowload Selected Records screen select 'RefWorks direct import' then click 'download'

CQ Electronic Library databases:
  • While searching any of the CQ Electronic Library databases click on a record.
  • From within the record click 'CiteNow' (near the top of the page)
  • From the CiteNow! pop-up window scroll to the bottom and click 'Export citation to:' then select 'RefWorks'

CSA databases:
  • While searching any CSA database, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save and then click 'Update Marked List'.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Save/Print/Email'.
  • In the 'Save/Print/Email' window select 'Export to RefWorks'.

EbscoHOST databases:
  • While searching any EbscoHOST database, select articles you wish to save by clicking 'Add' next to the citation.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Folder' and re-select articles you wish to export to RefWorks.
  • Click Export.
  • In Export Manager window, choose 'Direct Export to RefWorks' and click Save.

  • While searching any ERL WebSPIRS 5 (Silverplatter) databases, place a check mark next to items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Save'.
  • Click on 'Export to RefWorks' then click 'OK'.

  • While searching any of the FirstSearch databases, place a check mark next to terms in search results you wish to save and then click 'Marked Records'.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Export'.
  • In the 'Direct Export Records' window select 'RefWorks' then click 'Export'.

Gale Databases:(Academic OneFile & Gale Virtual Reference Collection)
  • While searching some of the Gale databases, mark items in search results you wish to save and click 'Add to list'.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'My List' tab and again select items in this list for export.
  • Click 'Output' and specify export format: 'RefWorks direct export'. Click Export to move them to your RefWorks database.

Google Scholar:
  • To customize Google Scholar to export references directly to RefWorks click on the 'Scholar Preferences' link next to the search box.
  • In the Bibliographic Manager section click 'Show links to import citations into' and select 'RefWorks' and click 'Save Preferences'.
  • Click on 'Import into RefWorks' from the Google Scholar results screen'.

HAPI (Hispanic American Periodicals Index) :
  • While searching the HAPI (Hispanic American Periodicals Index) database, place a check mark next to items in the search results you wish to save and then click 'Add to Marked List'.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'View Marked List'.
  • From the Marked List window select 'Download Records'.
  • Once the Download the Marked List window appears click 'Export to RefWorks' link.

HOMER - Library Catalog:
  • While searching HOMER - Library Catalog, mark items in the search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click 'Selected all pages'.
  • Click 'Printer Friendly Version' and then select all the text displayed by pressing ctrl + A or right click and select 'select all'..
  • Copy the text selected by pressing ctrl + C or right click and select 'copy'.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'Endevor Voyager'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select 'University Connecticut'.
  • Click Import Data from the following Text and then paste your text by pressing ctrl + V or right click and select 'paste'
  • Click 'Import'.

Note: Alternatively you can search Homer - Library Catalog from within RefWorks by selecting 'Search' and then click 'Online Catalog or Database'.    
     
International Index to Music Periodicals:
  • While searching within the International Index to Music Periodicals, place a check mark next to items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Marked Items'.
  • Click on 'Export Directly to RefWorks'.

ISI Web of Knowledge:
  • While searching ISI Web of Knowledge, select items in the results you wish to save and click 'Add to Marked List'
  • Click on the 'Mark List' link near the top of the database screen.
  • Click 'Save to EndNote, Reference Manager, or other reference software'
  • Save the file to the desktop on your computer.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'ISI (Institute for Scientific Information'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select the name of the database you were searching (ex. Web of Knowledge).
  • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from ISI Web of Knowledge.
  • Click 'Import'.

JSTOR:
  • While searching JSTOR, mark items in search results you wish to save and click 'Save Citation(s)'.
  • You will be promoted to login to save your citations. Create a login by clicking the 'Registering' link.
  • Once logged in to your JSTOR account at the top of the screen click the 'Saved Citations(s)' link.
  • Re-select articles you wish to export to RefWorks and click on 'Export Article Citations'
  • Click 'RefWorks' to move them to your RefWorks database.

  • While searching LexisNexis, mark items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Export Bibliographic References' (book icon in top right corner of results listing) and select 'Export'.

Live Search Academic:
  • While searching in Live Search Academic, select a record and click 'Citation Export'.
  • Select 'RefWorks' and then click 'Export to RefWorks'.

OVID databases:
  • While searching OVID, place a check mark next to items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, select 'Complete Reference' from the Fields menu along the left side of your results listing.
  • From the actions menu along the left side of the your results listing click 'Save'.
  • Select the appropriate format and click 'Continue'.
  • Save the file to the desktop on your computer.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'OVID'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select the name of the database you were searching (ex. Health & Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)'.
  • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from OVID.
  • Click 'Import'.

ProQuest databases:
  • While searching any ProQuest database, place a check mark next to items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'Marked Items'.
  • Click on 'Export Directly to RefWorks'.

  • While searching PubMed, place a check mark next to items in search results you wish to save.
  • When searching is completed, select from the display drop down menu 'MEDLINE'.
  • From the send to drop down menu select 'File'.
  • Save the file to the desktop on your computer.
  • Login to RefWorks.
  • In RefWorks click 'References' and then select 'Import'.
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu select 'NLM PubMed'.
  • From the Database drop down menu select 'PubMed'.
  • Select 'Import Data from the following Text File' and then browse to the file you saved from PubMed.
  • Click 'Import'.

SCOPUS:
  • While searching SCOPUS, select items in search results you wish to save and click 'Add to list'.
  • When searching is completed, click on 'My List' tab and again select items in this list for export.
  • Click 'Output' and specify export format: 'RefWorks direct export'. Click Export to move them to your RefWorks database.
